The United Nations (UN) has issued a warning about the excessive reliance on technology in education. In a report released by UNESCO, the UN’s education, culture, and science agency, it was stated that while technology can play a role in education, it may hinder the development of basic skills like reading. The report emphasized the need for teachers to strike a balance between incorporating technology and focusing on essential skills. It highlighted the lack of substantial evidence regarding the benefits of digital technology in education and urged a shift in focus towards learning outcomes rather than digital inputs.

Manos Antoninis, the director of the UNESCO report, emphasized the importance of combining technology with a solid pedagogical framework. He noted that simply distributing devices without proper planning and support is insufficient. The report also highlighted a growing trend of banning smartphones in classrooms, with one in four countries implementing such measures. Antoninis explained that the presence of phones in the classroom can be distracting, leading to decreased learning effectiveness.

The report strongly discouraged substitution of technology for traditional key skills, as these skills are crucial in navigating the digital world. It mentioned that students with strong reading skills are more likely to be cautious and avoid falling for online scams, such as phishing emails. Antoninis stressed the importance of teaching reading skills for both academic and digital literacy.

Overall, the report serves as a reminder that while technology has its place in education, it should not overshadow the acquisition of fundamental skills. Finding the right balance between technology and traditional teaching methods is crucial for effective education in the digital age.
