Researchers from the University of Glasgow have revealed the potential for an “animal-centered internet,” offering a platform where pets could interact not only with humans but also with each other. Lead author Dr. Ilyena Hirskyj-Douglas, from the University’s School of Computing Science, emphasizes the immense possibilities this could unlock, while cautioning that such systems must be tailored to meet the specific needs and capabilities of our furry and feathered friends.

The study’s focal point was the social behavior of parrots, shedding light on their preference for live interactions over pre-recorded messages. Dr. Hirskyj-Douglas explains that parrots, highly social creatures by nature, thrive on constant communication—a stark contrast to the solitary confinement often experienced in domestic settings. This isolation can lead to adverse behaviors like pacing or feather-plucking, highlighting the importance of providing avenues for socialization.

The methodology of the study was both innovative and meticulous. Nine pet parrots were given personalized profiles on social media platforms, equipped with tablets to facilitate video calls via Facebook Messenger. Through a series of live and pre-recorded sessions, researchers observed a clear preference among the parrots for real-time interactions. Over six months, the birds spent significantly more time engaged in live calls, demonstrating a remarkable consistency in their behavior.

What sets this research apart is its implications for animal welfare. By leveraging digital technology, scientists have unlocked a means for pets to connect with peers, potentially mitigating the stress and loneliness associated with domesticity. Dr. Hirskyj-Douglas emphasizes that the observed behaviors during live interactions mirrored those seen in natural settings, underscoring the authenticity and significance of these connections.

The ramifications of this study extend beyond the realm of pet ownership. It prompts us to reconsider our approach to animal welfare in an increasingly digitized world. By recognizing and catering to the social needs of our animal companions, we pave the way for a more inclusive and compassionate future—one where the internet serves not only humans but also our beloved pets.

As Dr. Hirskyj-Douglas concludes, “Studies like this could help to lay the foundations of a truly animal-centered internet.”
