The Dashing School for Wayward Princes is an upcoming middle-grade graphic novel by Ben Kahn, Jeremy Whitley, and Melissa Capriglione that tells the story of Leo, a supposed prince who identifies as a princess. Leo discovers the courage to be true to oneself amidst the school’s rigid and outdated gender norms and together with new friends, Leo stands up to those who say otherwise. Julia McCarthy of Atheneum has acquired the world rights to publish The Dashing School for Wayward Princes in the summer of 2025.
Jeremy Whitley, one of the writers of The Dashing School for Wayward Princes and the creator of Princeless, tweeted that the upcoming graphic novel is his answer to a decade of writing Princeless. It is a story about princes who do not conform to gender norms and a boarding school that propagates toxic masculinity. The publishing deal with Atheneum was negotiated by Jeremy Whitey’s agent Moe Ferrara at BookEnds Literary and Melissa Capriglione’s agent Laurel Symonds at KT Literary.
Atheneum Books for Young Readers, an imprint for children’s books, will publish The Dashing School for Wayward Princes in the summer of 2025. Established in 1959 by Alfred A. Knopf, Jr., Simon Michael Bessie, and Hiram Haydn, Atheneum merged with Charles Scribner’s Sons in 1978, eventually becoming part of Simon & Schuster in 1994.
