Robotic Security Systems: A Possible Addition to Nearby Schools

Team 1st Technologies

Several U.S. schools are currently testing innovative AI-equipped security robots that are designed to patrol the campus 24/7 in search of unauthorized individuals.

Ensuring school safety is a constant concern for staff, students, and parents, especially with the increasingly alarming incidents of mass shootings.

Santa Fe High School in New Mexico is among the pioneers in piloting the use of an autonomous robot developed by Team 1st Technologies in Albuquerque, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal.

The 5-foot, 400-pound robot operates on wheels and has a camera mounted on a mast that provides a 360-degree video feed to the school’s security team. Utilizing AI technology, it learns the unique characteristics of the school, including its layout and activity patterns.

The robot can identify aggressive or suspicious behavior and approach potential intruders, notifying them that they are being observed while granting security personnel time to respond.

Addressing privacy concerns, the robot does not possess facial recognition capabilities, and during the initial pilot program, Santa Fe High School officials are responsible for handling the captured footage and determining its storage duration.

A teacher at the school described the robot as a “seven-camera dog” and highlighted its usefulness in monitoring less-attended areas of the campus, which may not receive sufficient attention from human security members.

Team 1st Technologies is providing the trial to the school free of charge, but the regular price for the robot is estimated to be around $65,000 for an entire school year.

The Wall Street Journal mentions that Team 1st Technologies is just one of many companies developing security robots for schools. If the successful 60-day pilot in Santa Fe continues, these machines could soon be deployed in other schools as well.

It is not only schools that are experimenting with security robots. New York City is currently testing several robots for law enforcement, although a previous similar effort was abandoned due to public outcry over various concerns.
