If you were hoping for a more theatrical experience with Final Fantasy 16, then you’ll be delighted to hear that a stage play adaptation is in the works.
According to GamesRadar, Square Enix has announced that Final Fantasy 16 will be transformed into a musical, set to take place next year for a limited run. However, the catch is that the musical will only be performed in Japan, with two runs scheduled. The first run will be held from May to June at the Takarazuka Grand Theater, followed by another run in July and August at the Tokyo Takarazuka Theater Performance.
Notably, the musical will be performed by the all-female Takarazuka Revue musical theater troupe. This means that all the characters will be singing, creating a unique and different vibe compared to the original game. While it won’t affect characters like Jill, it will certainly bring a distinct atmosphere to Clive’s deep and husky voice, as well as Cid’s even deeper and rougher tones.
If you’re planning to attend the show in Japan next year, keep in mind that tickets won’t be available until April 27, 2024, when they go on sale for the first run.
This isn’t the first time a Final Fantasy game has been adapted for the stage. Earlier this year, Final Fantasy 10 received a Kabuki adaptation, featuring an all-male cast. The costumes for that production were fantastic, so it’ll be exciting to see how the Takarazuka Revue handles the costuming for Final Fantasy 16.
In addition to the stage adaptation announcement, Square Enix also revealed that the entire Final Fantasy series has now sold over 180 million copies. With Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth set to release next year, it’s clear that more sales are on the horizon.
