Report Claims YouTube Music’s Pop Up Alert for Explicit Content is Disrupting Playback

YouTube is taking proactive measures to protect its users from harmful content related to self-harm or suicide. However, there have been recent complaints from users about a content warning prompt on YouTube Music that is interrupting playback. This issue is affecting both the mobile and web apps of YouTube Music.

According to a report from Android Police, YouTube Music is displaying a warning prompt to listeners if the next song in the queue contains explicit references. This prompt pauses the streaming and interrupts the music, as reported by various Reddit users in the YouTube Music Sub Reddit thread mentioned in the report. This problem seems to primarily affect users who are using Bluetooth headphones.

“I was really enjoying YouTube Music until it started warning me about suicide and violence themes. Now I have to accept the warning, which stops my playlist. This only happens with my Bluetooth headset and not in my car, for some reason,” said Redditor u/Sherbert-Vast in the r/YouTubeMusic thread.

Frustrated YouTube Music users have also shared screenshots of this pop-up prompt.

The content warning prompt reads, “Viewer discretion is advised: The following content may contain suicide or self-harm topics,” and gives users the options to cancel or confirm.

Playback on YouTube Music reportedly does not resume until users respond to this notification.

Users who have complained about this issue have not been able to find a way to disable the pop-up alert. Even with Restricted Mode deactivated in the settings of YouTube Music, the warnings continue to appear.

As of now, YouTube Music, which boasts around 80 million users worldwide, has not addressed these user complaints.

In March, YouTube Music introduced features that display song credits and detailed album information. The platform added a “View Song Credits” option, allowing users to add songs to playlists or share them on social networking platforms.

YouTube Music also has plans to launch a podcast-focused service to compete with Spotify. Earlier this year, Kai Chuk, the head of podcasting at YouTube, mentioned these plans at an event. However, no specific timeline for the rollout of YouTube’s podcast services has been provided.
