Part Two’ Moves Up Two Weeks

Denis Villeneuve‘s hotly-anticipated Dune: Part Two has changed its release date again. The sci-fi sequel will now premiere on March 1, 2024. Variety reports that the upcoming science fiction epic, will now kick off March, where it will contend with the animated sequel Kung Fu Panda 4 and the Blumhouse horror pic Imaginary.

The film was originally slated to debut last month, but has been punted around the schedule. It was most recently pushed back to March 15 to avoid the now-concluded SAG-AFTRA strike, which would have prevented the film’s glittering constellation of stars, including Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, and Florence Pugh, from promoting it. However, with the strikes now concluded, the film is ready to ramp up its promotional efforts again.

What Can We Expect in ‘Dune: Part Two’?

Dune: Part Two will adapt the second half of Frank Herbert‘s groundbreaking 1965 science fiction novel Dune. After the events of the first film, when the despotic Harkonnens reclaimed the spice-rich planet Arrakis from House Atreides, killing patriarch Duke Leto (Oscar Isaac) and forcing his wife Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) and son Paul (Chalamet) into exile, the sequel will pick up with Paul and Jessica building new lives among the nomadic, desert-dwelling Fremen of Arakkis. There, Paul will train under the Fremen chieftain Stilgar (Javier Bardem) in order to become the prophesied Muad’Dib of the Fremen. He will reunite with his friend Gurney Halleck (Josh Brolin), raise an army to overthrow the Harkonnens, and romance Fremen warrior Chani (Zendaya). However, the Harkoennens, led by the grotesque Baron Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgård) and his brutal nephew Rabban (Dave Bautista), won’t go down without a fight. The sequel will also introduce a number of new characters, including the psychopathic Harkonnen scion Feyd-Rautha (Austin Butler), galactic emperor Shaddam IV (Christopher Walken), and Shaddam’s daughter, Princess Irulan (Pugh).

Dune: Part Two may not be the end for Villeneuve’s adventures in the universe of Dune. He intends to follow Dune: Part Two up with an adaptation of Herbert’s mind-bending sequel novel, Dune: Messiah. Nor is it the only Dune project in the works; Max is producing a prequel series, set 10,000 years before Dune, depicting the origins of the manipulative Bene Gesserit sisterhood. Now titled Dune: Prophecy, it has undergone some production shakeups but is slated to arrive next fall.

Dune: Part Two will hit theaters on March 1, 2024. Stay tuned to Collider for future updates.
