A PlayStation 5 prototype console recently appeared for sale on Yahoo Auctions in Japan, offering a glimpse of the familiar v-shaped design seen in the console’s devkit. The listing, which started with a bidding price of JPY 800,000 (approximately $5,500), has since ended, but it is unclear if the console was sold. Unfortunately, individuals from the EEA and the United Kingdom cannot access Yahoo Auctions as of April 2022.
The Yahoo Auctions listing for the PlayStation 5 prototype 2 console included several pictures, revealing that this particular unit is even older than the devkit that was previously showcased before the PS5’s final design was disclosed. While its appearance is similar to the devkit, featuring indicators such as Status 1/Status 2, On/Standby, Reset, Eject, System Init, Network Init, six USB ports, and an LED display, the prototype console boasts some distinct elements. On its back, it has a single HDMI port, two ethernet ports, and an extra USB port.
Although this PlayStation 5 console is likely non-functional due to licensing restrictions, it is an appealing item for collectors. While only a fortunate few can afford these rare consoles, their public listings offer us the opportunity to explore the differences between prototype designs and the final products.
