The microblogging platform also took down 2,865 accounts for promoting terrorism in the country. This brings the total number of accounts suspended by X in India to 18,53,887.
Twitter’s Account Suspension Process
X stated that it utilizes technology and specialized internal tools to identify and suspend accounts.
“The vast majority of accounts suspended for promoting terrorism and child sexual exploitation are flagged proactively through a combination of technology and purpose-built internal tools,” the company explained.
Complaints and Grievances
In its monthly report, X revealed that it received a total of 2,056 user complaints in India and took action on 3,712 URLs on the platform. Additionally, X processed 49 grievances related to account suspensions between June 26 and July 25.
“After reviewing the specifics of the situation, we overturned 1 of these account suspensions. The remaining reported accounts remain suspended,” X noted. The company further added that it received 14 requests regarding general questions about Twitter accounts during this reporting period.
According to Twitter, the majority of complaints received were related to abuse/harassment (1,783), followed by hateful conduct (54), privacy infringement (48), child sexual exploitation (46), and impersonation (42). It should be noted that complaints received are different from account suspensions.
Recently, X’s CEO refuted a report claiming that harmful content viewed on Twitter is increasing and stated that hate speech has actually decreased. She mentioned that more than 99% of the content seen by users and advertisers on Twitter is healthy.
“This means only a small amount of content requires enforcement. But no matter the amount, we will keep doing whatever it takes to make this platform as safe and healthy as possible,” she emphasized. Yaccarino, the CEO, also highlighted Twitter’s transparency and the validation of its impact by external groups.
