Why OpenAI, creator of ChatGPT, has disabled the Browse with Bing beta feature – Find out the reason

OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, recently introduced a feature that allows users of the AI chatbot app to browse the web using Bing. This feature uses Bing to search for answers to user queries. However, OpenAI has now disabled the beta integration to address a problem. According to an update from the company, “ChatGPT Browse with Bing is a beta feature (available to ChatGPT Plus subscribers) that allows ChatGPT to search the internet to help answer questions that benefit from recent information.” The company further explained that they discovered the beta feature occasionally displays content in a way they don’t want, particularly when a user requests the full text of a URL. OpenAI stated, “As of July 3, 2023, we’ve disabled the Browse with Bing beta feature out of an abundance of caution while we fix this in order to do right by content owners. We are working to bring the beta back as quickly as possible, and appreciate your understanding!”

The ChatGPT Plus subscribers, who belong to the premium tier of the AI chatbot, were the ones given access to this feature. Moreover, it has been reported that these users were able to bypass paywalls by utilizing the ChatGPT’s Bing integration.

Now let’s discuss the significance of Browsing with Bing. OpenAI states that browsing is beneficial in scenarios where queries involve current events or other information that is beyond the scope of ChatGPT’s original training data. Therefore, Browsing allows the AI chatbot to access more accurate and up-to-date information by searching the web. It’s worth noting that disabling the Browsing feature limits ChatGPT’s knowledge to information up to 2021. For instance, if Browsing is disabled and a user asks ChatGPT about the winner of the 2022 FIFA World Cup tournament, it won’t provide the correct response.
