Vision Pro developer kits now available for application from Apple

Apple has announced that developers can now apply for a Vision Pro headset through the company’s website. The dev kit includes not only the headset, but also assistance with device setup, support for code-level requests, and consultations with Apple experts on app development for visionOS.

Priority will be given to applicants creating apps that make use of visionOS features and capabilities. However, it’s unlikely that companies like Netflix, which reportedly plans to offer an unmodified iPad app on the Vision Pro, will be chosen.

To apply, developers must be Account Holders in the Apple Developer Program and provide details about their team’s skills and existing apps. Additionally, Apple has strict rules about securing the devices, requiring users to keep them out of sight and securely locked away from unauthorized individuals at all times.

Similar to other limited-access hardware like Security Research Device iPhones, Apple has detailed policies to ensure the protection of the Vision Pro. Unauthorized access, viewing, or handling of the dev kit is strictly prohibited.

Apple is also hosting Vision Pro developer labs in various locations globally, including Cupertino, London, Munich, Shanghai, Singapore, and Tokyo. Developers can apply for these labs on Apple’s website. Furthermore, Apple has released a compatibility checklist to help developers ensure their apps are ready for visionOS.

Apple aims to simplify the process of bringing iOS and iPadOS apps to the Vision Pro headset by automatically porting them over without requiring developers to make any changes. However, developers are encouraged to refine their apps for visionOS and create new ones. The Vision Pro headset is expected to be launched early next year in the US, with a starting price of $3,499.
