Various Costume Designs for The Flash and Batman Revealed in Concept Art

Finally, after a series of delays and controversies involving its star Ezra Miller, The Flash has at last made its debut in theaters. This multiversal tale serves as the culmination of the previous DC universe, drawing inspiration from the Flashpoint comic event as Barry Allen attempts to reset the entire universe. One of the standout elements of the film is the return of Michael Keaton as Batman, reprising the role he last played in 1992’s Batman Returns. Keaton’s Batman is equipped with a variety of gadgets and Batsuits that pay homage to the character’s rich history. Comic illustrator Joe Quinones had the opportunity to contribute several Batsuit design concepts to the film, and now that it has been released, he has shared his work on Twitter.

Quinones, a seasoned veteran in the world of comics, has worked on numerous titles for Marvel, DC, and more. Among his recent works is Batman ’89, which explores an alternate continuity for Keaton’s Batman following the events of Batman Returns. Naturally, Quinones drew inspiration from Tim Burton’s Batman universe and the action figures based on the films when creating his suit designs. The final designs showcased in the film included the laser attack, stealth jumper, aero strike, and jungle tracker Batsuits, all heavily influenced by the action figures from the 1989 Batman film and Returns, with a touch of inspiration from Bob Kane’s original design for the Caped Crusader. These suits deviate from Batman’s traditional attire but provide versatility to his arsenal. Quinones also tackled other suits, such as the air attack suit, scuba diving outfit, and “firebolt” Batman.

In the film, Keaton’s Batcave features a range of suits that reference Batman’s extensive comic book history, as well as his previous film appearances and even Adam West’s iconic television portrayal. Though not as wild as Quinones’s envisioned designs, some suits showcased in the movie have additional armor and attachments that make them stand out. Overall, the designs offer a unique throwback to the era when Burton’s Batman reigned supreme.

The Flash is packed with Easter Eggs and cameos that delighted Batman and DC fans. Director Andy Muschietti fully embraced the concept of the multiverse, with Keaton’s Batman serving as the centerpiece. The film begins with Barry teaming up with Ben Affleck’s Batman and Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman before embarking on his time-traveling journey. Alongside nods to West’s Batman, the movie also holds a few unexpected surprises for audiences. Muschietti revealed that there were even more cameos that didn’t make it to the final cut, which could have added to the absurdity of the viewing experience.

The Flash revolves around Barry Allen using his powers to go back in time and prevent his mother’s death, but unintentionally landing in a dark reality where metahumans are non-existent and General Zod (portrayed by Michael Shannon) has returned to Earth. He teams up with a younger version of himself and convinces a retired Batman to help set things right. They even recruit Supergirl (played by Sasha Calle) to aid in their mission. While the film has faced some criticism for its CGI, it is generally regarded as a fitting conclusion to the previous era of DC films, grossing $9 million in Thursday box office previews.
