Recent rumors about a potential Zelda movie produced by Illumination and Nintendo have been denied by Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri. Speaking at the Annecy International Animation Festival, Meledandri stated that while he understands how people may speculate due to the positive relationship between the two companies, there is no official deal regarding a Zelda movie.
This denial leaves room for two interpretations. It is possible that there is currently no development on a Zelda movie. Alternatively, Meledandri’s denial could simply indicate that he is not ready to discuss a deal that has not been finalized. It currently holds the title of the third-highest-grossing animated film in history, trailing behind The Lion King remake and Frozen II. Additionally, it achieved the biggest global opening weekend for an animated film and is presently the highest-grossing film released in 2023.
Nintendo’s recent Zelda game, Tears of the Kingdom, also experienced tremendous success. Within three days of its release for the Nintendo Switch (although playable via emulators on PC as well), it sold over 10 million copies worldwide, becoming the best-selling Zelda game to date. In the United States alone, it became the fastest-selling Nintendo game, surpassing four million units sold.
Zelda’s popularity extended to Japan, where it sold over 1.1 million units in its initial three days. Expectations are high for the game’s future sales milestones.
