Ubisoft Offers Assurance: Game Libraries Safe from Deletion Despite Game Inactivity, Soothes Worried Fans

Ubisoft fans experienced a wave of panic over the weekend due to a rumor suggesting that inactive Ubisoft accounts would be deleted, resulting in the permanent deletion of users’ digital game libraries. However, Ubisoft has now clarified that this rumor is false. Even if a user’s account is inactive, their digital game library remains safe.

The alarm was raised when a tweet circulated showing an email titled “Ubisoft Account Closure Due to Inactivity.” This email informed the recipient that their Ubisoft account had been temporarily suspended and would be permanently closed in 30 days unless the closure was canceled by the account owner.

Ubisoft Support’s Twitter account confirmed the authenticity of the email and reiterated the instructions for canceling the pending account closure.

While the email was indeed legitimate, the panic was fueled by the original poster’s claim that “You will lose all your games purchased forever.”

In response to an email inquiry from IGN, Ubisoft provided a clarification regarding account deletions. The publisher confirmed that it has been deleting inactive accounts in accordance with the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) for several years. These deletions are aligned with legal requirements and industry standards and also serve as a measure against fraud.

Ubisoft further specified that accounts with purchased games attached to them are not eligible for deletion. The following criteria are considered before an account is deleted:

  • The gaming activity of the account since its creation
  • The account’s libraries: accounts that include purchased PC games are not eligible for deletion [emphasis Ubisoft’s]
  • The duration of inactivity of the account, meaning the last login to our ecosystem (including from Ubisoft games on Steam and other platforms)
    • In practice, as of today, we have never deleted accounts that have been inactive for less than 4 years
  • The existence of an active subscription tied to the account.

Ubisoft added that emails similar to the one circulated are sent to users 30 days prior to account deletion. If a user attempts to log in during this period, they will receive a notification and a link to reactivate the account upon login. More information about Ubisoft’s account closure policy can be found on their official website.

In conclusion, if you haven’t logged into your Ubisoft account for an extended period, you don’t need to worry about losing your game library. However, it’s essential to be aware of the risks associated with digital ownership of games and other media. The potential for losing these libraries exists, particularly as digital game releases are surpassing physical copies. But in this particular situation, Ubisoft is not indiscriminately deleting accounts.
