The Reason Behind Marvel’s Decision to Connect Red Skull with the Soul Stone

The Infinity Saga of the Marvel Cinematic Universe was shrouded in secrecy, revolving around Thanos’ pursuit of collecting all the Infinity Stones to obliterate half of the living creatures in the universe. However, the Soul Stone proved to be more intricate than its counterparts due to its direct link to the characters and plot of Avengers: Infinity War.

During a Q&A session after Collider’s film screening in 2018, Joe and Anthony Russo, the brains behind the project, shared how they had to handle the Soul Stone with care. They aimed to craft a stone that has an emotional connection to the plot and to Thanos as a character. Joe Russo explained, “I think it was the last stone that we figured out where it was because that was the hardest story to come up with. It was really when we decided that the movie was Thanos’ movie, we needed the lowest moment of the film to belong to him, so that’s when we started to develop the Soul Stone story.” They had to create pain to dimensionalize Thanos, leading to the story of sacrificing something that one loves to approach the Soul Stone. In Thanos’ case, it was his daughter, Gamora, whom he had to sacrifice.

Interestingly, the Soul Stone was guarded by a familiar face Marvel fans had not encountered on the big screen for a long time: the Red Skull. Joe Russo explained that he believed Red Skull was always the right character despite playing around with other options. Red Skull “has been on a journey” since his last appearance in Captain America and is “a slave to the stones” and “a ghost.”

Regarding the Soul Stone’s workings, Joe Russo revealed that it could manipulate one’s essence or soul. The Soul Stone allows a person to resurrect or conjure spiritual representation of the dead. These abilities lead to vital moments like Doctor Strange’s multiple copies and Thanos conversing with his dead daughter.

Thanos’ attack devastated the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe, causing consequences still felt five years after Infinity War’s release. Its aftermath can be seen in projects like WandaVision and the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3. The end of the Infinity Saga also marked the last time Robert Downey Jr. played Tony Stark, shifting the franchise to a new era where new faces would lead.

As Earth’s mightiest heroes face a new threat in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, it remains to be seen if they can match their previous strength. Check out Collider’s interview with Joe and Anthony Russo below for more insights into the making of the Infinity Saga.
