The Lord of the Rings: Gollum Gets a New Launch Window, Will Release by September 2023

The highly-anticipated action-adventure game, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, has been delayed once again and is now set for release in the first half of fiscal year 2023–24, with a launch window stretching from April to September 2023. Originally scheduled for a 2021 release, this marks the third delay for the game, as developer Daedalic Entertainment had previously stated a delay of “a few months.” This latest delay pushes the release date further into 2023.

In September of last year, Daedalic provided an update, explaining that the delay was necessary to ensure that The Lord of the Rings: Gollum would be in the best technical state upon release. This was likely in response to the negative feedback received from fans regarding the gameplay trailer, particularly criticizing the outdated graphics and textures. The game’s gameplay itself will immerse players in the world of Middle-earth, with a captivating story that follows Gollum’s journey after losing the One Ring to Bilbo Baggins. Drawing heavily from J.R.R. Tolkien’s original material, the game acts as a prelude to Peter Jackson’s The Fellowship of the Ring.

The gameplay of The Lord of the Rings: Gollum focuses heavily on stealth, which is fitting for a character like Gollum who lacks physical strength. However, Gollum possesses exceptional agility, allowing him to crawl and climb surfaces unnoticed. Reflecting his split personality, players will have to make decisions between a timid approach or a cunningly evil route during moments of conflict, as Gollum’s two sides, Gollum and Sméagol, come into play. “One mind, two egos — you decide!” describes the game on Steam. The gameplay footage also showcased a swimming mechanic with an oxygen counter, although it was shown from a first-person perspective, leaving uncertainty about the ability to switch camera perspectives. All other gameplay footage was presented from a third-person perspective.

In addition to The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, other Middle-earth franchise video games are also in development. Private Division and Weta Workshop, known for their visual effects and prop work in the LoTR and Hobbit movies, are collaborating on an unnamed title which will be revealed in due course. Another title, The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria, is a survival crafting and base-building game where players control a company of Dwarves in an attempt to reclaim their lost spoils from the Moria homeland. This game is expected to be released sometime later this year.

Players will be able to experience The Lord of the Rings: Gollum on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, and Nintendo Switch.
