Ken Pillonel, a renowned modder, has recently embarked on a mission to enhance the AirPods Pro, following his successful creation of the first iPhone with a USB-C port.
Pillonel’s previous modding endeavor involved equipping a pair of AirPods with a USB-C port. Now, he has found a way to make the charging case of the AirPods Pro more user-friendly.
A major drawback of the AirPods’ case is its difficult repairability due to the use of glue for sealing. This makes it challenging to replace internal components. To address this, Pillonel has modified an AirPods case by replacing the glue with nuts and screws to hold it together.
“I am undertaking a significant project to showcase how Apple’s popular gadget, the AirPods Pro, could have been easily repairable with minimal effort,” stated Pillonel in a press release. “My main objective is to encourage consumers to be more conscious of their choices and motivate manufacturers to prioritize sustainability.”
The modified case enables users to easily access and replace the battery without the need for soldering. Pillonel also claims that his design reduces the amount of glue used in the case, and any remaining glue can be easily removed with acetone.
Unfortunately, the project does not cover the AirPods themselves as Pillonel finds them harder to replicate using his current tools. However, he hopes to tackle this challenge in a future project.
Additionally, Pillonel mentions that he has been unable to open the second-generation AirPods Pro case without damaging it. For those interested, Pillonel has shared the schematics and files on his Patreon page, although attempting this project will likely void the AirPods Pro warranty.
