Study finds that the nutritional content of plant-based milk often falls short of cow’s milk

New research suggests that a majority of plant-based milk alternatives contain fewer nutrients compared to cow’s milk.

There has been an increase in the consumption of milk alternatives made from plants like oats, soy, and almonds. It is important for consumers to be aware of the nutritional value of these alternatives.

The study aimed to determine whether vegan products provide the same nutrition as cow’s milk, which is a significant source of calcium and vitamin D. These nutrients are essential for maintaining healthy bones, teeth, and muscles.

The researchers examined over 200 plant-based milk alternative products available in the USA in 2023.

Our findings indicate that many plant-based milk alternatives are not nutritionally equivalent to cow’s milk.

Only 12% of the studied milk alternative products contained similar or higher amounts of all three nutrients: calcium, vitamin D, and protein, compared to cow’s milk.

The NHS recommends cow’s milk and dairy products as excellent sources of protein and calcium, vital components of a balanced diet.

However, unsweetened calcium-fortified dairy alternatives like soy milk, yogurt, and cheeses also contribute to the dairy food group and serve as good substitutes for cow’s milk.

Abigail Johnson, assistant professor and associate director of the University of Minnesota School of Public Health Nutrition Coordinating Centre, emphasized the need for consumers to choose plant-based milk alternatives that prominently list calcium and vitamin D as ingredients.

The study’s findings were presented at the Nutrition 2023 conference, organized by the American Society for Nutrition. However, the results are preliminary and have not undergone peer review.
