Comcast is laying fiber and expanding service in Griswold and Sterling.

The project will expand the company’s internet connection is expected to be completed by the end of the year and will enable 500 homes in Sterling and 2,200 homes and businesses in Griswold access to Xfinity and Comcast Business, the company press release stated.

This is a part of Comcast’s $400 million investment into technology and infrastructure in the state over the past three years.

“As we expand our gigabit-speed network further into Griswold and enter Sterling, we bring more choices for powerful broadband and cost-effective mobile to even more residents and businesses across New London and Windham counties,” stated Carolyne Hannan, Senior Vice President of Comcast’s New England Region, in the press release.

It’s good for Griswold to get more internet service. As Griswold wants to attract more business, having more options for internet service could help, First Selectman Tina Falck said.

“The more you have to offer, the better response you’re going to have,” she said.

Xfinity service had already been available in the Jewett City section of Griswold. This is also a part of an expansion into all of New London County, New England Region PR Director Elizabeth Walden said.

The construction process is going well and is on schedule. Passersby may see a technician bringing service into a home, or see someone doing construction on poles or underground. The work itself is minimally disruptive, and existing customers won’t notice a thing, Walden said.

The Griswold Department of Public Works has worked with Comcast on the remediation of lawns that have been disturbed, and in other matters, Falck said.

“It’s an ongoing process,” she said.

For Sterling, Comcast is working all over town on their lines but hasn’t had any interaction with the town government. First Selectman Lincoln Cooper personally has had good internet access through Breezeline, he said.

“I think (Comcast) made it so everyone will have it if they want it, it’s just a matter of people deciding if they want to give it a try,” he said.

Why is expansion happening in Griswold and Sterlin

This expansion has been based on prioritizing dense populations where the network is already nearby. While Comcast doesn’t know how many customers it will gain from the expansion, residents and businesses can visit  Xfinity.com and Business.Comcast.com to see if they can access the service. Comcast will also notify customers 30 days in advance of service becoming active in an area, Walden said.
