Today, developer Joel Jordan has released the highly anticipated game Time Bandit – Part 1: Appendages of the Machine on Steam and itch.io. This game was previously highlighted in my popular article, “Here are eleven 2022 indie games to look forward to.” Now, in the middle of 2023, fans can finally experience it firsthand.
Time Bandit revolves around the struggles of having a mundane and oppressive job, where workers are exploited for their time crystals, potentially for sinister purposes.
However, there’s a catch. Time Bandit operates on a real-time clock, similar to the mechanics in Pokemon Gold/Silver. Your gameplay progress is determined by real-world time, and various tasks require different amounts of time to complete. You may even need to meet characters at specific times, which they schedule with you in advance. Flexibility and spontaneity must be sacrificed in order to challenge the capitalist overlords effectively.
Although I intended to provide a review of Time Bandit – Part 1: Appendages of the Machine upon its release, ironically, I haven’t had the time to do so. I hope to revisit and review it soon because I thoroughly enjoyed the version I played last year. Furthermore, I provided feedback directly to Joel, so I’m excited to see if any of it was incorporated. It’s as if I have a personal investment in the game, even though I’m just a regular commenter.
