Sonos plans a second round of job cuts as it changes product strategy

Sonos, the US-based audio manufacturer, is cutting jobs in its product development department, as announced by the company’s Chief Product Officer in an email to employees.
Maxime Bouvat-Merlin, the Chief Product Officer, broke the news in an email to the company’s employees on Wednesday, as reported by Blomberg, after the quarterly earnings report. He stated that the affected personnel would receive notifications via email and that termination discussions would take place on Thursday.
The number of job positions to be cut has not been specified. The latest job cuts come after a previous reduction in June, which saw 7% of jobs being cut. In September, a reorganisation of the company’s product group led to 200 employees being assigned new roles, teams, or managers.
According to a memo from the company’s executive, the latest job cuts are the result of a change in product strategy, and not an effort to reduce operating expenses.
“In some cases, this process has surfaced some roles which unfortunately are no longer aligned with our product ambitions and current needs,” Bouvat-Merlin wrote.
The company stated that it will be holding meetings with employees to explain how teams will be changing, and an all-hands meeting will also be held on December 7 to address the rejig.
Sonos plans to launch new headphones
According to the memo, Sonos has a dedicated team working on headphones. Additionally, there are separate teams now working on home products, portable speakers, and voice control.
During the earnings call on Wednesday, Sonos CEO Patrick Spence said that a new product category would be launched in the coming months. Spence stated that this product was expected to generate over $100 million in revenue and that new offerings – codenamed Lasso, Pinewood, and Premier – are already in the works for the near future.
As reported, the company has been developing headphones for over four years, but no official announcement has been made yet.
