September Release Confirmed for Dark Souls Archtrones Demo, a Prequel Mod for DS3

A preview for the forthcoming Dark Souls 3 prequel mod, Dark Souls Archthrones, will be arriving in September.

The announcement came through a brief teaser on the project’s official Twitter account yesterday. The exact release date was not provided in the video, but it mentions “September 2023”. More information about the preview will likely be shared soon.

For those who are unfamiliar with this highly anticipated Dark Souls 3 prequel mod, Dark Souls Archthrones will be a DLC-sized mod that incorporates mechanics from the original Demon’s Souls game. The development team promises overhauled 3D models, new animations, improved lighting, and the world layout of Demon’s Souls, including soul form, world tendency, and more.

Throughout the past year, the fan-made mod has released several gameplay videos and screenshots showcasing its environments and combat.

“Archthrones is an ambitious overhaul mod for Dark Souls 3”, the development team describes. “We have been working on it for nearly 2 years, but there is still much more for us to accomplish.”

“An alternate story unfolds across five unique worlds, each accessed via the Nexus of Embers. Encounters with bosses and allies await in this challenging, yet beautifully reimagined version of Lothric and other Dark Souls locations.”

We will provide updates as soon as more information about the mod and its preview becomes available. Stay tuned for further updates.

Dark Souls 3 is currently available worldwide for PC and consoles. The game was released in 2016 and has received two official expansions. However, this upcoming prequel mod will only be compatible with the PC version. Here’s what we had to say about FromSoftware’s Dark Souls installment in our launch review:

My journey through Lothric to meet with the Lords of Cinder took me through unforgettable landscapes and often kept me up at night as I pushed through another passage, seeking out another bonfire. It’s an experience that dedicated Souls fans know they can’t miss, while those new to Dark Souls, eager to discover the hype, will find this to be the perfect starting point.
While it may not be everyone’s favorite Souls game, it certainly holds that title for me, and I can guarantee that Dark Souls III will dominate more than a few Game of the Year lists in 2016.
