Continuing Apple’s Big Health Push: Engaging Heart, Mind, Eyes, and Ears

In 2019, the CEO of Apple made a thought-provoking statement about the company’s contributions to mankind. He declared that Apple’s greatest contribution would be in the field of health. This statement may seem bold, but when we take a closer look at Apple’s recent endeavors, it becomes clear that they are indeed making significant strides in the health sector.

Upcoming Mental Health Features

Apple is now taking a fresh approach to promote mental health awareness with its upcoming software updates. Through the Health app and Mindfulness app, which will be available on iOS 17 and watchOS 10, users will have the ability to log their moods and record their state of mind. They can choose from a range of emotions, indicating how they feel using engaging and multidimensional shapes. Users can also identify the factors affecting their emotions, such as travel or family, and describe their feelings using words like grateful or worried.

The Health app provides valuable insights into the factors contributing to their state of mind, including associations and lifestyle factors like sleep and exercise. Armed with these insights, users can effectively manage their overall health and well-being.

Eye Care

During WWDC 2023, Apple unveiled watchOS 10, which brings exciting features for eye care. One of these features is the ability to measure the time spent in daylight using the ambient light sensor. Users can view the data regarding their daily exposure to daylight in the Health app on iOS 17 and iPadOS 17. This feature is particularly significant as experts recommend that children spend a minimum of 80-120 minutes outdoors each day to prevent myopia.

For children who do not have their own iPhones, parents can use Family Setup to pair their child’s Apple Watch with their own iPhone. This allows parents to monitor the time their children spend in daylight, promoting a healthy lifestyle while providing additional benefits.

Heart Health Features

The Heart Rate app on Apple Watch alerts users about high or low heart rates and irregular heart rhythms. Notifications are available on Apple Watch Series 1 and later models for individuals aged 13 and above. Additionally, Apple Watch has an irregular rhythm notification feature that periodically examines the heartbeat for signs of atrial fibrillation (AFib).

Potential Health Features of AirPods

Rumors suggest that Apple may enhance AirPods Pro with additional sensors. One of these sensors could measure body temperature through the ear canal, potentially offering more accurate readings than the wrist temperature collected by current Apple Watch models during sleep. While this temperature data currently aids in fertility tracking, Apple aims to utilize it in the future for identifying illnesses such as the common cold.

Another feature in development is the ability to assess a person’s hearing ability by playing various tones and sounds.
