Science: The Saving of a Frog Requires a Whole Community

The Togo slippery frog was once thought to be extinct due to human hunting, fishing and habitat destruction. However, in 2007, Caleb Ofori-Boateng, Ghana’s first trained herpetologist, spotted one while on an expedition in southern Ghana and western Togo. After years of searching, Ofori-Boateng finally had the opportunity to hold the frog again in March 2013, and since then, efforts have been made to conserve the species and its habitat.

Ofori-Boateng established Herp-Ghana, a nonprofit organization focused on amphibian conservation, and has worked tirelessly to build relationships with locals and convince them of the importance of protecting endangered species like the Togo slippery frog. The organization has trained “behavior change champions” to encourage locals to stop poaching in the forests and has restored degraded areas of the Onepone Endangered Species Refuge, a reserve co-owned and managed entirely by local communities.

Thanks to these efforts, the Togo slippery frog population has more than doubled since 2013. Herp-Ghana is now working on creating a new reserve to protect a new cluster of frogs and other endangered species, with a grant from the Whitley Fund for Nature.

Ofori-Boateng and his team have also conducted outreach activities with locals in churches and homes to educate them about the importance of protecting the environment and caring for amphibians. This “conservation evangelism” approach has the potential to build support for conservation among religious communities.

Overall, Herp-Ghana’s efforts have been successful in promoting conservation among local communities and saving the Togo slippery frog from extinction.
