Secret Invasion Episode 1 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe series Secret Invasion has already addressed a significant criticism within the franchise regarding the lack of stakes in previous storylines. However, it is unfortunate that the fate of a central character has already been revealed. In other MCU storylines, it can be difficult to become emotionally invested in the plot when the characters seem invincible. Rarely do heroes or main characters die, and even when they do, they often come back later in the story. The character we are discussing today has “died” before, only to be revived later in the story. Another issue with a franchise as vast and fast-paced as the MCU is that marketing sometimes moves faster than the release of the stories, unintentionally spoiling plot points. This seems to be the case with this major MCU character.
On April 11, 2023, Marvel released the first trailer for The Marvels, a new MCU feature film that continues the storylines and characters from Captain Marvel, WandaVision, and Ms. Marvel. The film brings together Carol Danvers, Monica Rambeau, and Kamala Khan as they face an intergalactic threat from the Kree Empire. Nick Fury also assists the trio. In Secret Invasion, Nick Fury is the main character. The series follows his return to Earth to deal with a rebellion of Skrulls, the shapeshifting green aliens from Captain Marvel, with the help of his allies. The first episode of Secret Invasion sets the stage for escalating tension with explosions and character deaths. However, with the knowledge that Nick Fury will play a significant role in The Marvels, it is unlikely that he will be killed off.
The death of Maria Hill, Nick Fury’s closest confidant, in Secret Invasion’s first episode is a game-changer. Hill, who has been a character in the MCU since Phase 1, is killed by Skrull terrorist Gravik. It is shocking not only because she is a major character, but also because Cobie Smulders, the actress who portrays her, has actively marketed the series. Hill’s death sets an interesting precedent that shows consequences are possible for these characters. While Fury may escape the conflict physically unharmed, other side characters like Talos, G’iah, and Sonya Falsworth may not be as fortunate.
Despite the relatively low risk to Nick Fury’s character, Secret Invasion can still offer tension and higher stakes through its ensemble storyline. Talos, in particular, has a significant role in the series. He helps Fury uncover a global conspiracy and grapples with his sense of morality. G’iah, a mysterious character, also adds to the intrigue of the story. Secret Invasion continues with Episode 2 premiering on Wednesday, June 28.
