Realme’s Android Phones: Analyzing Data Tracking Concerns and Expanding the Blame Landscape

The Chinese smartphone manufacturer, Realme, has come under the scrutiny of the government due to concerns regarding user privacy. A Twitter user noted that Realme’s “Enhanced Intelligent Services” feature, which captures sensitive user data such as call logs, SMS, and location information, is automatically enabled during phone setup. Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the Minister of State for Information Technology and Electronics, has taken notice of this matter and has stated that the government will investigate it further.

Chandrasekhar retweeted a tweet accusing Realme and shared a screenshot, stating that the issue will be tested and checked. The user’s tweet argues that the “Enhanced Intelligent Services” option is automatically enabled on Realme phones without user permission, and the company is collecting data without consent. We at Times of India have verified that this feature is indeed enabled by default on Realme smartphones, but users have the option to disable it if they choose not to share their data.

It is important to note that this feature is not exclusive to Realme smartphones, as it is also present on other Android devices from OnePlus, Oppo, Vivo, and iQoo, all of which are owned by BBK Electronics. Additionally, Samsung smartphones have a similar feature called “Send Diagnostics Data,” which is also enabled by default.

The “Enhanced Intelligent Services” feature on Realme smartphones enhances the user experience by optimizing device functions based on usage patterns. To do so, the company collects certain device information, app usage statistics, location information, calendar events, unread SMS statistics, and missed call statistics. This requires the operating system to have permissions to access various data, which are enabled by default. However, users have the option to turn off this feature in the “System Services” settings.

Certain functions of the phone, such as charging optimization and personalization features, rely on the data collected by the “Enhanced Intelligent Services” feature. However, it is unclear how this data will be used and whether it is shared with any third parties. Realme has not provided any comments regarding this matter at present.
