Day One Performance Patch Confirmed for Final Fantasy XVI

Final Fantasy XVI will receive a day-one patch, despite Square Enix’s initial hesitation. In the recent Final Fantasy XVI launch live stream, the developers announced that the patch will mainly focus on addressing performance issues. Here is a comprehensive list of the fixes:

  • Resolve a control flag issue that may impede progress in specific circumstances
  • Fix unexpected game closure in certain situations
  • Optimize performance in various areas
  • Correct minor text errors

It’s important to note that the patch will not be mandatory, and Square Enix estimates that it will be a relatively small download of around 300MB.

The performance of Final Fantasy XVI already showed some issues in the free demo released for PlayStation 5. Besides addressing optimization problems with the day-one patch, the developers also discussed feedback received after the demo’s release.

Many players expressed concern about the abundance of cutscenes in the demo. Producer Naoki Yoshida acknowledged this and explained that the first act of the story contains more scene-setting than later parts of the game. As the game progresses, players can expect a shift towards a more action-oriented experience. However, crucial story moments will still feature lengthy scenes. Yoshida expressed confidence in the overall narrative, assuring players that once they become immersed in the story, the length of the scenes won’t be a concern.

Japanese players specifically criticized the English lip synchronization, which Square Enix admitted was not prioritized for the Japanese language due to resource constraints. They attempted to use AI to adjust lip synchronization for Japanese, but the results were unsatisfactory. The developers encouraged players to experience Final Fantasy XVI with English voices and subtitles in their native language.

Square Enix is also exploring options to adjust motion blur, potentially through a dedicated setting or the ability to disable it completely. They are also considering additional options, such as adjusting camera movement speed and allowing players to disable auto-follow.

The developers also discussed the structure of the demo, highlighting its focus on set-piece battles but assuring players that the game will open up with explorable areas later on. This decision influenced the absence of a mini-map, as the team prioritized allowing players to immerse themselves in the world rather than constantly referring to a mini-map. However, a map will still be accessible in certain locations by using the touchpad.

Final Fantasy XVI will launch on June 22nd for PlayStation 5. For more information, check out our detailed article and stay tuned for our comprehensive review early next week!
