A legal disciplinary panel in Washington, D.C., has taken a significant step towards disbarment for Rudy Giuliani, former New York City mayor and personal lawyer to ex-President Donald Trump. A three-member Bar Association panel, responsible for reviewing ethics and misconduct, has unanimously decided that Giuliani should be disbarred. Their statement reads, “He sought to disrupt a presidential election and persists in his refusal to acknowledge the wrong he has done.”
According to the 38-page D.C. Bar report, Giuliani argues that he should only receive a “informal admonition of reprimand, or at most, a 3-day suspension” if any rules were violated.
Following the recommendation of disbarment, the full D.C. Bar board will review the claims and hold their own vote. If they also favor disbarment, the case will then be reviewed by the D.C. Court of Appeals, which will make the final decision.
If Rudy Giuliani is disbarred, he will not be eligible to reapply until five years from the effective disbarment date.
Giuliani’s lawyer, Barry Kamins, has announced a plan to file a strong appeal against the court’s recommendation.
