Oneplus: Explained: Rain Water Touch feature on OnePlus phones and how it works

Smartphones have made significant advancements in high-speed charging, vibrant displays, and professional camera performance. However, one persisting issue with device screens is their inability to function properly when wet, especially when used outdoors on a rainy day. Chinese smartphone manufacturer OnePlus has developed a solution to this problem with their new screen technology.

Rumors suggest that OnePlus will unveil the Ace 2 Pro smartphone in China on August 16, introducing a groundbreaking feature called “Rain Water Touch.”
What is Rain Water Touch

According to a report by 9to5Google, OnePlus showcased the upcoming Ace 2 Pro smartphone on the Chinese social media platform Weibo. This mid-range smartphone is equipped with innovative screen technology that enables accurate touch input even when the screen is wet.

In a comparison test against the iPhone 14 Pro, the OnePlus Ace 2 Pro outperformed the Apple device in accurately handling touch input on a wet screen. The iPhone experienced difficulties, sometimes ignoring touches or providing inaccurate responses. This is a common challenge faced by most smartphones, and OnePlus aims to revolutionize this aspect.

How does it work
Most smartphone displays rely on capacitive technology to detect the user’s finger. This technology uses electrical conduction to identify where and when the finger makes contact with the screen. However, when the screen is wet, the presence of water affects the detection process as water also conducts electricity. OnePlus addresses this issue with a unique touch algorithm and a custom chip, improving touch sensitivity even when the screen is wet.
OnePlus has yet to announce the global launch of the Ace 2 Pro. It is expected that the phone will be released in markets outside of China under a different branding. Rumors suggest that this technology will also be featured in the upcoming OnePlus 12 flagship smartphone, which shares similarities with the OnePlus 2 Ace Pro.
