The Last of Us Trailer: Pedro Pascal, Bella Ramsey Journey Into the Post-Apocalyptic, Hostile West

The highly-anticipated trailer for the upcoming TV series adaptation of the zombie-killing survivor game, The Last of Us, has been released by HBO Max. This live-action adaptation showcases our protagonists, Joel (played by Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (played by Bella Ramsey), as they cautiously navigate the heavily-infected west coast. Neil Druckmann, the original writer of the game, is directing an episode of the HBO series and collaborating with Craig Mazin, the writer of Chernobyl, as co-writer. The Last of Us TV series will premiere on January 16 on Disney+ Hotstar in India.

The Last of Us TV series trailer begins with a voiceover as our characters make their way towards a golden building, presumably the Massachusetts State House where they must deliver the teenage girl Ellie. Ellie asks Joel, the hardened survivor tasked with smuggling her to the rebellious Fireflies, a resistance movement fighting against the oppressive military, “If you don’t think there’s hope for the world, why bother going on?”. Joel, who lost his daughter during the outbreak in Texas, responds, “You haven’t seen the world, so you don’t know.” Meanwhile, we see Joel stealthily navigating past a clicker. For now, he only sees Ellie as “cargo” and remains depressed and untrusting.

The following segment in the trailer provides exposition, revealing that Ellie’s blood contains something that prevents her from turning into a “monster” even after being bitten. She informs Tess, Joel’s partner in crime who joins them on their mission, that somewhere out west they are working on a cure. We are then shown a montage of overgrown streets, militants invading settlements, an armored vehicle, and piles of dead bodies, reminiscent of the visuals from the original 2013 video game. New characters suggest that traveling west is risky, causing Joel to briefly contemplate the worst possible outcomes.

“You have a greater purpose than any of us could have ever imagined,” reassures Marlene, the leader of the rebel Fireflies, instilling in Ellie the belief that the world’s future rests in her hands. As the trailer continues with a melancholic rendition of A-Ha’s “Take on Me,” there is a fleeting glimpse of Ellie’s mother, portrayed by Ashley Johnson, who also provided the voice for the character in the game. If you look closely, you may spot Troy Baker, the original voice actor for Joel, as a member of David’s gang, a cannibalistic survivor group.

The trailer then showcases various characters coping with the outbreak, including Nick Offerman’s greasy-haired Bill, an unlikely ally seen sniping down enemies. After the title card, we catch a glimpse of the terrifying Bloater, the fourth and final evolutionary stage after years of exposure to the Cordyceps brain infection.

The Last of Us TV series will premiere on January 16, 2023, on Disney+ Hotstar in India. For regions with HBO/HBO Max, the show will be available for streaming from January 15, 2023, starting at 6pm PT/9pm ET.
