Marvel Fans Give Their Takes on How the MCU Can Reboot One of the Most Divisive X-Men Movie Villains

Marvel’s X-Men films have been hailed as one of the first successful franchises in the Marvel universe, earning them a certain level of respect. Despite their imperfections, these films introduced fans to the definitive portrayal of Wolverine by Hugh Jackman, who continues to be a nostalgic favorite. It is perhaps for this reason that the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is taking its time in bringing mutants to the big screen for the upcoming X-Men reboot. While seeds have been planted in shows like Ms. Marvel, where Kamala Khan is revealed as a mutant, Marvel must ensure they get the X-Men right in order to satisfy the millions of fans who hold them dear. One of the major shortcomings of the previous X-Men movie timeline was the portrayal of the infamous villain, Apocalypse.

Poor Oscar Isaac never had a fair chance to fill the shoes of this larger-than-life character, who stands as one of the oldest mutants in history. As his name suggests, Apocalypse is meant to be awe-inspiring and overpowering. He should command attention with a thunderous voice, capable of striking terror into the hearts of those who hear it. In the comic books, Apocalypse is portrayed as a character who has the potential to take over the world, as seen in the storyline of Age of Apocalypse. Unfortunately, Isaac fell short of meeting these expectations. With a whispery voice and a height that was not reminiscent of the character’s imposing stature, the portrayal of Apocalypse did not accurately capture the essence of the comics. The MCU now has the perfect opportunity to rectify this and deliver the Apocalypse fans have been waiting for.

Apocalypse was not imposing enough

To do Apocalypse justice, the MCU must unleash the full potential of this ancient mutant without holding back. Apocalypse is one of the most formidable villains in the X-Men universe, surpassing even the likes of Magneto in terms of threat level. Driven by a desire to make humans subservient to mutant rule, Apocalypse has no qualms about committing genocide, often wiping out millions of humans at once. This type of adversary demands a depiction that goes beyond the lackluster portrayal seen in X-Men: Apocalypse, which merely served as a setup for the Phoenix Saga in the next film. Fans on Reddit unanimously agree that Apocalypse should be a force to be reckoned with, standing on par with other iconic villains.

Fans also noted that Oscar Isaac’s height detracted from their immersion in the story. Regardless of Isaac’s talent as an actor, he couldn’t compensate for the diminished stature of Apocalypse. In the comic books, this villain towers at close to 7 feet, radiating power through both his abilities and physical appearance. While the film’s production team made efforts to depict Apocalypse with blue skin and a villainous costume, they failed to address the issue of his height.

Furthermore, Apocalypse must be a genuine threat to the X-Men. He should be portrayed as so imposing and terrifying that even the heroes of the story face the risk of losing everything. In X-Men: Apocalypse, the Four Horsemen were depicted as a minor annoyance that was swiftly resolved. However, the character of Apocalypse has the potential to conceivably take over the world, serving as the ultimate nightmare for all. This should not be a role confined to a second-tier movie.

Thanos, Marvel’s world-killing monster, took 10 years to fully realize his menacing potential and become a threat to everything the Avengers held dear. Apocalypse, at the very least, deserves more than a single movie that fails to showcase his true power and impact.
