Ola Launches Krutrim, India’s First AI Computing Stack Rooted in Cultural Contexts

Ola has introduced its AI solution for its customers. Ola CEO Bhavish Aggarwal announced the launch of his new project Krutrim.

While posting a video on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Agarwal wrote that AI is going to define the future paradigm of economy and culture.

“We are extremely happy to launch India’s first AI computing stack that is unique to our context, connecting our future to our roots. AI will certainly transform everything, making India the most productive, efficient, and empowered economy in the world,” he tweeted.

Ola’s AI solution, Krutrim, is derived from the Sanskrit word which means artificial.

According to the company, this model is built on local Indian knowledge, languages, and data. The model will come in two sizes, which include a base model and a larger model. Let us know about it.

Aggarwal emphasized that for India to lead globally, it must establish itself as an AI powerhouse. Existing AI models, known as LLMs, predominantly operate in English, lacking the ability to comprehend the rich cultural nuances, values, and aspirations embedded in India’s diverse multilingual and multicultural landscape. He stressed the need for India’s AI to uniquely understand and express the country’s cultural context, paving the way for true global leadership.

“An AI-first economy will improve labor and capital productivity. It will push the Indian technology industry on a non-linear path and make it a global Knowledge Center. An AI-first economy will make India a leader in scientific discoveries and this AI will be a tool for cultural expression. Rather than assimilation into a single Global Paradigm. We need to Envision India’s Computing stack, silicon upwards, developing chip designs and making long-term RND Investments in the same,” he added.

Krutrim will be available in two sizes, first, its base model, which is trained on 2 trillion tokens and a unique dataset, and second, Krutrim Pro, which will handle larger, more complex models, advanced problem-solving and task execution. Ola will launch the Krutrim Pro model in the next quarter.

According to the company, Krutrim can understand 22 Indian languages and works in about 10 languages including Marathi, Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, Oriya, Gujarati, and Malayalam.

Aggarwal informed that the base model of Krutrim can be used by signing up for it. It is being started in batches from today. The full open release of CruTrim is scheduled for January 2024, and the CruTrim API will be available to developers from February 2024.
