Nothing introduces affordable sub-brand CMF by Nothing: All the details

Creating a sub-brand out of the primary brand is a common strategy for Chinese electronics brands. Oppo created Realme, Vivo created iQoo, and Xiaomi created Redmi. However, these brands did so after establishing themselves in the market. But Nothing, under the leadership of CEO Carl Pei, has taken a different approach.

During the announcement of CMF by Nothing, a sub-brand focused on “making a new range of products that make better design more accessible,” Pei emphasized the importance of Color, Material, and Finish (CMF). This sub-brand aims to create well-designed and affordable products, with the belief that good design should be accessible to everyone.

Pei made it clear that Nothing and CMF would operate independently and be managed by separate teams. The strategic move is to position Nothing as a high-end brand, while CMF will cater to the low-cost product segment. This approach aims to attract a wider range of consumers and enhance the success of the Nothing ecosystem.

Nothing’s premium products will appeal to consumers who value high-quality devices and are willing to pay more. On the other hand, CMF’s low-cost products will attract budget-conscious consumers. Having two distinct brands allows Nothing to cater to different consumer preferences and increase its market share.

Nothing and Pei have consistently expressed their belief that the tech industry has become mundane. During the CMF announcement, Pei stated, “When you look at the value segment within the technology sector, there just isn’t a lot to get excited about. Good quality seems like a false promise.”

Nothing’s upcoming product lineup from CMF includes a smartwatch and a pair of true wireless earbuds. Given Nothing’s reputation for design excellence, it will be interesting to see how these products align with the brand’s philosophy. Notably, Nothing’s Phone (2) has already received acclaim and attention for its design.
