Nintendo Direct Unveils Incredible Secrets of Super Mario Bros. Introducing Exciting New Elephant Power-Up

Nintendo recently unveiled its highly anticipated Super Mario game, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, during its Direct showcase event. This 2D side-scrolling game introduces a range of innovative mechanics to the iconic platformer, including a new power-up that transforms the protagonist, Mario, into an elephant. Super Mario Bros. Wonder is the first new side-scrolling Mario game from Nintendo in a decade and offers local multiplayer functionality. It also features mind-bending effects that alter the game’s environment. The game is set to release exclusively on the Nintendo Switch on October 20.

The gameplay trailer for Super Mario Bros. Wonder begins in the familiar style that fans of side-scrolling Mario games have grown accustomed to over the years. However, the visuals have received an upgrade, with high-definition graphics that almost resemble 2.5D textures. Players can expect classic elements like secret items, coins, green pipes, and Goombas to stomp on. Additionally, the game introduces talking flowers in the backdrop, offering words of encouragement and highlighting interesting interactive items throughout the world. During certain moments, players will encounter Wonder Flowers, which completely transform the appearance of the game world through trippy animations. Mario can be seen running atop a herd of sheep, a peculiar sight in this otherwise familiar landscape.

The objective of Super Mario Bros. Wonder seems to revolve around collecting Wonder Seeds, scattered across diverse maps with varying difficulty levels. Notably, the game allows players to assume the roles of other beloved characters from the franchise, such as Princess Peach, Princess Daisy, Luigi, and Toad. Each character possesses unique animations. Local multiplayer support is also included, as showcased by Mario riding atop Yoshi to navigate levels. Gameplay still involves core mechanics such as platform hopping, rail grinding, and swimming up waterfalls. Towards the end of the trailer, viewers catch a glimpse of Mario’s new power-up, which turns him into an elephant upon consuming an unusual-looking fruit. While specific abilities remain undisclosed, the trailer showcases Mario effortlessly subduing peaceful Goombas by merely making contact with them.

Nintendo has enjoyed a remarkable year, starting with the opening of a theme park and the massive success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which surpassed the billion-dollar mark in less than a month after its April release. Both these projects were heavily influenced by Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto. Additionally, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom received critical acclaim, despite experiencing a leak two weeks before its official launch, allowing PC gamers to access it early via an emulator.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder is scheduled for release on October 20, exclusively on the Nintendo Switch. Pre-orders are now available on the Nintendo eShop.
