NASA Spacecraft Successfully Navigates 94% of its Journey Towards the Sun

After scientists recently unveiled new insights into the solar wind during its previous close encounter, the Parker Solar Probe, launched by NASA, has successfully completed its latest approach to the sun.

On June 27, the probe reached a distance of only 5.3 million miles from the solar surface while traveling at a speed of 364,610 miles per hour, as confirmed by NASA.

This distance represents approximately 96% of the Earth-sun distance, equivalent to about 93 million miles.

The most recent close approach, referred to as “perihelion” by astronomers, occurred during the probe’s 13th orbit since its launch on August 18, 2018.

Predicting Space Weather

Parker Solar Probe’s objective is to assist scientists in identifying the source of high-energy particles that generate the solar wind, a continuous flow that extends throughout the entire solar system. Determining its origin effectively defines the boundary between the solar system and interstellar space.

By uncovering and comprehending this origin through Parker’s mission, solar physicists aim to gain a better understanding of heliophysics and subsequently enhance space weather predictions.

As these charged particles collide with Earth’s atmosphere, they produce magnificent auroras as well as negative impacts such as radio blackouts, satellite aging in orbit, potential harm to astronauts, disruptions to electrical grids, and in extreme cases, even disturbance in internet connectivity.

Up next for the Parker Solar Probe is a flyby of Venus on August 21, which will be its sixth out of seven planned encounters. This maneuver is crucial as it will position Parker for even closer approach to the sun. During its next perijove on September 27, 2023, Parker will reach an astounding distance of only 4.5 million miles from the sun’s surface.

Wishing you clear skies and wide eyes.
