‘Larry Hryb, Popularly Known as Xbox’s ‘Major Nelson,’ Departs from Microsoft’

Larry Hryb, also known as “Major Nelson” within the Xbox community, announced via a tweet today that he will be departing from Microsoft. Hryb, who served as the Director of Programming for Xbox Live, has been a prominent figure for the brand and shared no specific reasons for his departure, only expressing his intention to explore the next phase of his career. This announcement comes amidst Microsoft’s ongoing efforts to finalize their acquisition of Activision for $68 billion. Hryb took a moment to express his gratitude towards the millions of gamers worldwide who have embraced him as part of their lives, reflecting on all they have accomplished together.

Hryb had a long tenure with Microsoft, initially joining the company as an editor-in-chief for MSN Music in 2001. However, it was his involvement with the Xbox division in 2003 that truly defined his identity within the company. He played a dual role as an official employee and an avid enthusiast, connecting with the gaming community through his blog posts, podcasts, interviews, unboxings, and other engaging updates. Hryb’s unique position as a trusted “gamer’s gamer” and marketing executive made fans feel like they had an insider within the gaming giant.

Although Xbox reduced Hryb’s public presence in recent years, he had become synonymous with the platform from the mid-2000s to the mid-2010s as “Major Nelson.” He humorously reveals that he adopted his gamer handle and nickname from Larry Hagman’s character in the classic sitcom I Dream of Jeannie, thanks to a recommendation from his TiVo.

While Hryb has yet to reveal specifics about his future career plans, he did mention that The Official Xbox Podcast, which he hosted, will be on hiatus during the summer before returning in a fresh new format. Exciting changes are on the horizon for both Major Nelson and Xbox enthusiasts.
