Ken’s Very Own Power Ballad

Move aside, Barbie, because Ken is ready to show off his dance moves! The upcoming toy movie, led by Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, is set to bring a fun and exciting pink world to fans. Directed by Greta Gerwig, this movie promises to deliver nostalgia and amazing music.

Barbie has captured the hearts of fans with its campy vibes and diverse range of dolls, including Ken. Initial promotions gave us a glimpse of a disco-themed dance number featuring all the Barbies and a dance battle between Ken, played by Gosling, and Simu Liu. However, Rolling Stone recently revealed that Gosling will also have his own “Eighties-style power ballad,” produced by the talented Mark Ronson.

Music is a BIG part of Barbie’s World

Gosling’s musical background, showcased in Damien Chazelle’s La La Land, assures fans that he can handle any choreography thrown his way. And music will play a significant role in Barbie, with songs already released, such as a single from Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice. Robbie, who also produced the feature, explained how the music enhances the audience’s experience and acts as their voice.

In addition to Ken’s ballad, the movie will feature special songs such as Aqua’s “Barbie Girl” remixed by Minaj and Ice Spice as “Barbie World,” Karol G’s wild and raucous track “WATITI,” and Charli XCX’s “Speed Drive” written for a chase scene, and more. The music will play a crucial role in conveying the mood and emotions of the characters.

The movie boasts an incredibly diverse cast, with Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, Hari Nef, Alexandra Shipp, Emma Mackey, Dua Lipa, Ritu Arya, and more playing different versions of Barbie. Likewise, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Simu Liu, Scott Evans, John Cena, and Ncuti Gatwa portray various versions of Ken. The human characters include America Ferrera, Will Ferrell, Connor Swindells, Michael Cera, Jamie Demetriou, and Emerald Fennell. Helen Mirren will lend her voice as the narrator of the movie.

Barbie will hit theaters on July 21, 2023. Check out the trailer below:
