ONDC Head Invites Amazon and Flipkart to Join E-Commerce Network

India’s digital public infrastructure Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) has extended an invitation to e-commerce giants Amazon and Flipkart to join its network, according to T Koshi, the CEO of ONDC. In an interview with ANI, Koshi stated that the companies were welcome to join and that they were taking a serious look at ONDC. However, they have not yet integrated into the network.

ONDC, a non-profit company established by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), aims to develop open e-commerce. It promotes open source networks for exchanging goods and services on the internet, independent of any specific platform.

Unlike the current platform-centric digital commerce model, ONDC allows buyers and sellers to be digitally visible and conduct business transactions without being limited to the same platform or application. Incorporated on December 31, 2021, ONDC is still in its early stages of adoption but has the potential to revolutionize digital commerce.

India has a strong history of developing digital public goods infrastructure, such as UPI, Jan Dhan, Aadhar, and CoWin. ONDC is the next addition to this infrastructure, with its operations starting in January. It has already seen significant growth, handling over 30,000 transactions per day for goods and 50,000 transactions per day for services.

ONDC has attracted interest from both large players and small merchants due to its improved control over transaction terms and conditions, better pricing and cost structures, and the ability to offer special schemes for customers. Currently, the platform is primarily populated by grocery and food item merchants, but it is gradually expanding to include beauty, fashion, personal care products, electronics, and more.

In conclusion, ONDC is an innovative digital infrastructure that aims to democratize e-commerce in India. Its invitation to Amazon and Flipkart highlights the network’s potential and the interest it has generated across the industry. As the platform continues to evolve and attract more businesses, it has the potential to transform the digital commerce landscape in India.
