Jennifer Lawrence Considered Declining The Hunger Games Offer Over Twilight Fandom

Hollywood superstar Jennifer Lawrence, known for her role in The Hunger Games, revealed in a recent interview with The Rewatchables podcast why she initially considered rejecting the film. Lawrence explained that the overwhelming fame surrounding the Twilight franchise made her wary of taking on a similar large-scale project.

Lawrence stated, “I almost didn’t do Hunger Games because Twilight had come out and that fandom had happened. When I was trying to talk to people about making this decision after [Hunger Games] got offered to me, it was hard to explain this level of fame.”

Twilight, which grossed $3.3 billion and propelled actors Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, and Taylor Lautner into stardom, had a significant impact on Lawrence’s perception of fame. She clarified, “I assumed it was going to be the Twilight level of fame, and that was never something I had in mind. I never wanted to be the most famous person on the planet. That’s a very different life than I pictured for myself.”

Interestingly, prior to being cast in The Hunger Games, Lawrence auditioned for a role in Twilight. Unfortunately, she was rejected and did not receive a callback. Reflecting on the experience, she said, “My life would’ve been totally different. I got Hunger Games, I think, like, a year later. It was probably after Winter’s Bone.”

To establish herself beyond The Hunger Games franchise, Lawrence made sure to take on other film projects during breaks between installments. She explained, “I had to ‘churn out’ films to counteract the franchise-ness. I was still in a franchise, so I was still trying to balance it out.” However, she expressed gratitude for reaching a point in her career where she no longer needs to do that, adding, “I’d still be doing that if I was in Twilight.”

The Hunger Games prequel, The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, is set to debut on November 17, 2023, although Lawrence is reportedly not involved in the project.

In IGN’s review, The Hunger Games received a rating of 8/10. The review praised the film for staying true to its source material and capturing the essence of Katniss Everdeen’s story. It stated, “Both fans of the books and those new to the story will find The Hunger Games compelling. With the first film proving the series is in good hands, I’m excited to see the next chapters play out onscreen.”
