Is Reddit Malfunctioning? No, it’s a Protest by Reddit Users.

Reddit is in the midst of a major protest that began on June 12, 2023 and sees over 3,500 subreddits “going dark” to protest new site policies. Essentially, the popular subreddits such as r/Aww and r/TodayILearned voluntarily shut down, challenging planned changes to how the site treats third-party developers. To understand what’s happening, we need to understand how Reddit works. Reddit is made up of millions of subreddits, with each subreddit focused on a particular topic, ranging from r/Marvel to r/Android. Moderators are the ones responsible for ensuring posts stay on topic and inappropriate content is handled promptly. Third-party apps that help moderators manage subreddits have been accessing Reddit APIs for free, but earlier this year, Reddit changed this, announcing that certain apps would be able to get access for free, while the biggest and most popular ones would have to pay. Christian Selig, the developer of the popular iOS-only Reddit app Apollo, was shocked when he found out that it would cost him around $20 million each year to run Apollo under these new terms. This led to protests, with subreddits such as r/Save3rdPartyApps deciding to “go dark” for a set period of time and ceasing all access to their subreddits. Today, over 3,500 subreddits have gone dark to protest the planned changes, and they won’t work for at least the next 48 hours.
