Lionsgate has announced that it is already in the early stages of developing the fifth installment of the blockbuster John Wick franchise, despite the recent conclusion of Chapter 4 in theaters. According to Motion Picture Group Chairman Joe Drake during the Q4 2023 earnings call, along with John Wick 5, there are also a number of other projects in the works that expand the billion-dollar hitman universe. With Chad Stahelski, the director of the franchise’s previous films, also expressing an interest in working on the upcoming movie, John Wick 5 promises to maintain the action-packed narrative and thrilling fight sequences that audiences have come to expect from the franchise.
Drake also revealed that the studio is exploring ways of expanding the franchise beyond traditional cinema, including spin-off projects and a new gaming title. The Ana de Armas-led Ballerina spin-off is already confirmed to debut on June 7, 2024, while The Continental miniseries is set to premiere on Peacock sometime in September. Lionsgate is also in the process of developing three other projects, including additional television series, all of which will build upon the existing John Wick universe.
While the direction of the John Wick narrative remains uncertain, with the titular character seemingly laid to rest, Lionsgate’s ambitious plans run the risk of over-saturating the franchise and undermining the appeal of its previous successes.
