Is ‘Only Murders in the Building’ Teasing This Character’s Death?

Editor’s Note: The following article contains spoilers for the first two episodes of Only Murders in the Building Season 3.

In the latest season of Only Murders in the Building, the trio consisting of Charles, Oliver, and Mabel find themselves investigating the murder of actor Ben Glenroy. However, it is Oliver who faces a potentially life-threatening situation. Following Ben’s death, Oliver experiences a minor heart attack due to the stress of having his play put on hold. Despite his doctor’s orders to avoid stressful situations, Oliver decides to turn his play into a musical while simultaneously restarting the murder mystery podcast with Charles and Mabel.

While murder is an essential component of Only Murders in the Building, it seems that a character other than the primary victim of Season 3 is also at serious risk. Charles, Oliver, and Mabel, the hosts of a true-crime podcast, are once again embroiled in a complex mystery. This time, they must uncover the identity of Ben Glenroy’s killer, a man who was known for his rude and arrogant behavior while working on Oliver’s play, “Death Rattle.”

Despite the eventual revelation of Ben’s killer by the end of Season 3, there is an even greater mystery that haunts Only Murders in the Building’s latest season. In the second episode, one of the central characters faces a significant health scare, setting a foreboding tone for the rest of the season. This development is so significant that it may result in the trio becoming a duo.

Oliver Putnam, played by Martin Short, encounters serious health problems in Season 3 of Only Murders in the Building. Despite their penchant for encountering death and misfortune, things appear to be going well for Charles, Oliver, and Mabel. After successfully assisting in solving a murder case in the previous season, they are ascending in their personal lives. Mabel is overcoming her emotional past, Charles is pursuing acting and relationships, and Oliver is directing a new Broadway play.

The production of Oliver’s play is off to a promising start. With the recruitment of renowned actor Ben Glenroy and the discovery of a talented yet undiscovered actress named Loretta Durkin, everything seems to be falling into place. However, disaster strikes when Ben collapses on stage during the opening night, raising suspicions of another potential murder. These claims are initially debunked when Ben miraculously arrives at Oliver’s opening night party, revealing that he is not dead. However, the joy is short-lived as Ben is later pushed to his death down an elevator shaft, indicating an attempt to finish the job. This tragedy leads to the indefinite suspension of Oliver’s play.

Oliver has had a series of catastrophic events occur in his life, including a previous disaster during his time as the director of “Splash: The Musical.” The fact that Ben’s death occurs in the same theater as the original show seems more than coincidental. At Ben’s funeral, Oliver meets Maxine, a Broadway critic who expresses her dislike for his canceled show. This, coupled with the stress Oliver experiences, leads to a minor heart attack and the discovery of a heart murmur.

Instead of heeding his doctor’s advice and taking a break, Oliver decides to transform “Death Rattle” into a musical. This decision adds more stress to an already challenging situation. Meanwhile, Charles and Mabel are determined to uncover the truth behind Ben’s murder, prompting them to restart their podcast. It is during this moment that Oliver realizes the overwhelming nature of his circumstances.

In addition to dealing with the aftermath of Ben’s murder and the collapse of his play, Oliver must also face the truth about his son’s parentage. Season 2 revealed that Oliver is not Will’s biological father. This revelation, coupled with his failing health, adds further complications to Oliver’s already complicated life.

As Only Murders in the Building delves deeper into the murder mystery, Oliver finds himself juggling multiple challenges. With a murder to solve, a musical to direct, and a podcast to host, Oliver’s health is pushed to its limits. The audience can only hope that his heart will hold up under the strain.

The first two episodes of Only Murders in the Building Season 3 are now available for streaming on Hulu.
