Voice actors Spencer Grammer and Alan Tudyk address the issue of residual pay in the animation industry.
The ongoing SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes have brought various issues to the forefront, including the problem of residual pay for writers and actors. However, voice actors in the animated series industry are also facing similar challenges. They not only experience low residual pay but also lack the protection offered by membership in SAG-AFTRA. This includes cast members of the popular show Rick and Morty created by Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland. Spencer Grammer, who voices Summer Smith, shared how she does not qualify for health insurance despite being attached to multiple successful series. Alan Tudyk, known for Resident Alien and Firefly, echoed Grammer’s sentiment and highlighted the overall low pay for voice actors in the industry.
In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Grammer reveals that despite being part of a popular show like ABC Family’s Greek, she did not qualify for health insurance due to her earnings not meeting the requirements. This was despite her involvement in Rick and Morty at the time. Tudyk retweeted the interview, further emphasizing the low pay for voice actors. He stated that voicing every episode of a season of Rick and Morty would only earn them around $15,000, highlighting the unfair payment practices prevalent in the industry.
