Google Resolves Bug Allowing Unauthorized Microphone Access for WhatsApp on Android Devices; Offers Apologies to Affected Users

Last month, there were reports of an Android bug that granted constant microphone access to some WhatsApp users. WhatsApp initially attributed the issue to a bug on Android and asked Google to investigate and solve it. Now, Google has confirmed the issue and apologized for any confusion it may have caused. They have also urged users to update their WhatsApp to fix the bug. WhatsApp has emphasized that it only accesses the microphone during calls or when recording voice notes or videos, which are protected by end-to-end encryption.

Details of the Android bug:
In May, a Twitter user named Foad Dabiri raised concerns about WhatsApp using the microphone in the background without his knowledge. He shared a screenshot of the Android Dashboard, which showed that microphone access was enabled for WhatsApp, even though it shouldn’t be used in the background. This issue alarmed not only Dabiri but also received attention from other users, including Elon Musk, who expressed distrust in WhatsApp.

To address this bug, WhatsApp has rolled out a fix, and Google has acknowledged and apologized for the confusion caused. It is crucial for users to update their WhatsApp to ensure their privacy and control over microphone settings.
