In a blog post by Yulie Kwon Kim, Vice President of Product Management for Workspace Platform, the company stated, “We want to be completely clear that generative AI does not change our foundational privacy protections for giving users choice and control over their data.”
Kim emphasized that Google does not sell any Workspace users’ data and that the content users input into Google Workspace services, such as emails and documents, belongs to them. Users have the ability to delete or export their content as they see fit.
Furthermore, Kim assured users that Google does not use Workspace data to train or improve generative AI and large language models that power Bard, Search, and other systems outside of Workspace without permission. Therefore, users can rest assured that their data remains private and secure unless they provide consent.
In terms of targeted ads, Kim clarified that Google does not collect, scan, or use content from Google Workspace services for advertising purposes.
Duet AI, Google’s AI tool for Docs, Slides, and Sheets, stores any prompts or generated content alongside Workspace content but does not share them outside of the user’s organization. Duet AI implements the same enterprise-grade security measures as the rest of Google Workspace, ensuring data privacy and adhering to an organization’s existing data handling practices.
By prioritizing user privacy and providing transparent explanations of data usage, Google aims to alleviate concerns and promote a secure AI-powered environment for its users.
