“We wanted something spicier”: how a successful job interview completely changed Riot’s Project L

Project L, an upcoming game from Riot Games, has undergone significant changes since its inception. Originally known as Rising Thunder, the game was acquired by Riot Games in 2016. While it was initially a 1v1 fighter, Project L has now evolved into a 2v2 blend of popular tag-focused titles like Marvel vs Capcom and Blazblue: Cross Tag Battle.

The decision to shift from a solo showdown to a tag tussle was influenced by Daniel “Clockw0rk” Maniago, a former US pro player in the Marvel vs Capcom competitive scene. During his job interview at Riot Games, Clockw0rk expressed his vision for a 2v2 fighter and emphasized its potential for the League IP. This idea resonated with the development team, leading to Clockw0rk’s hiring and the adoption of the tag system.

Clockw0rk’s expertise in tag fighters and his passion for the genre played a crucial role in the development of Project L. While the team had considered the idea of a tag fighter before Clockw0rk’s arrival, his input and influence pushed them to embrace the concept fully. The team saw the tag system as an opportunity to create a new and engaging way for players to experience fighting games, whether competitively or cooperatively.

Although there have been previous games that allowed for tag-style gameplay, such as Street Fighter x Tekken, Dragonball Fighterz, and the Mortal Kombat series, Project L is unique in designing the entire game around the duo play experience. The team wanted to ensure that both solo and duo players could have a great experience, resulting in innovative gameplay mechanics that cater to different playstyles.

With Project L’s tag-based approach, the team aims to offer a fresh and exciting game that can challenge the traditional giants of the fighting game genre. While only time will tell if the tag system will resonate with players in the long term, it undoubtedly adds a new dimension to the game and contributes to the ongoing renaissance of fighting games.
