The tenth season of American Horror Story was set to feature Evan Peters in a significant and distinct role, but then Ryan Murphy’s Netflix limited series, Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, came along and changed everything. According to Eric Dawson, the Murphy casting director, before the Dahmer project, Peters had a crucial part in the AHS season. Alas, the cross-country filming made it impractical during the pandemic, and the producers had to find another Dahmer. After searching through 700 audition tapes of potential Dahmers, Murphy decided that he wanted Peters for the role. Dawson shared that even though Peters was initially unavailable, Ryan made it work by changing schedules and writing new scenes so that Peters could do both productions. Dawson also added that Ryan knew casting was as essential as the script, and he did everything possible to have the cast he wanted.
Though the pandemic-impacted American Horror Story: Double Feature might have been a mixed bag, Peters’ chemistry with Frances Conroy made Red Tide a personal favorite. The writers had to do some serious maneuvering to free up Peters for Murphy’s Netflix project, but the effort proved worth it. Ryan Murphy, as usual, found ways to make things work and get the cinematic outcome he desires.
