The use of a variety of plants, particularly the dandelion, has been forgotten as we have become disconnected from nature. Additionally, their long taproots protect soil by reducing wind and water erosion, aerate and moisten dry soil, and move nutrients such as calcium, iron, and potassium into the plants’ leaves to enrich soil after the plant dies back seasonally. Dandelions also grow quickly, covering bare, disturbed soil, providing shade and conserving moisture in an increasingly thirsty planet.

Apart from their many uses, dandelion seeds are some of the best flying seeds in nature. They catch the wind with their fluffy parachutes, dispersing up to 100 kilometers away from their mother. The secret lies in their sensitivity to humidity. Dandelion seeds evolved to respond to humidity in their environment, closing their fluffy parachutes to remain close to their mother and opening them wider in drier and windier conditions to fly far away. The design is simple, elegant, and beautiful, converting an environmental signal into movement without using any energy.

In conclusion, dandelions are an often-overlooked plant that has numerous benefits. They are a nutritious food item, an ecosystem engineer supporting native wildlife, and have an impressive seed dispersal mechanism – making them not just an ordinary plant but a fascinating one.
