EA Will Not Provide Refunds for In-Game Purchases as Apex Legends Mobile Closes Down in May

Apex Legends Mobile, the futuristic battle royale game for Android and iOS, is set to shut down less than a year after its release. Developer Respawn Entertainment confirmed the decision in a tweet, stating that the game will be discontinued across all regions on May 2, just weeks before its one-year anniversary. At 4:30am IST on that day, the game will become unplayable and all in-app purchases will be disabled. Today, the developer will remove the game from the store. However, players will still have a 90-day window to use their existing purchases before Apex Legends Mobile officially closes. In addition, publisher EA has announced the closure of its studio Industrial Toys and the termination of development on its Battlefield mobile title.

According to a blog post from Respawn Entertainment, the decision to sunset Apex Legends Mobile was reached after the game’s content pipeline failed to meet their standards for quality, quantity, and cadence. Despite this setback, the studio expresses its excitement about the mobile platform and its commitment to exploring new opportunities in the future. Players will be able to continue using their in-game virtual currency, Syndicate gold, until the game’s closure on May 2. However, EA has stated that it will not provide refunds for any real money purchases.

It’s worth noting that EA cites the terms of its user agreement as the reason for not offering refunds. Meanwhile, another game, Rumbleverse, developed by Epic Games and Iron Galaxy, has also announced its shutdown plan for February 28. However, Rumbleverse players will be eligible for refunds on all platforms, covering expenses such as the battle pass and in-game currency (Brawlla Bills). Further details about these refunds will be revealed in due course. During an earnings call, EA CEO Andrew Wilson hinted at a possible future for Apex Legends on mobile, stating that they have plans to reimagine a connected Apex Mobile experience.

Wilson explained during the call that the decision to shut down Apex Legends Mobile was due to the challenges of translating the immersive and complex gameplay of Apex to mobile devices. He emphasized the verticality of gameplay and team-based play, aspects that didn’t quite translate as well as anticipated. However, the decision only affects the mobile platform, and services for Apex Legends on PC and console will continue to operate smoothly.

In addition to Apex Legends Mobile, EA has also halted development on the Battlefield mobile game, originally announced in April 2021. A statement from the publisher explained that the decision was made to align with their strategy of creating a deeply connected Battlefield ecosystem and meeting the players’ expectations. The Battlefield franchise is currently undergoing significant changes, with Ridgeline Games leading the campaign segment of the upcoming games. Notably, Marcus Lehto, co-creator of Halo, is heading the studio. Furthermore, Vince Zampella, CEO of Respawn Entertainment, known for Titanfall and Apex Legends, has taken charge of Battlefield with the goal of building a connected universe.

According to Wilson, halting work on the mobile version of Battlefield allows for a thorough evaluation of the franchise’s broader strategy and the creation of a true cross-platform immersive game experience for a reimagined Battlefield in the future. In the meantime, the studio will focus on enhancing Battlefield 2042, which received a negative critical response upon release.
