‘Historic Opening Weekend for Oppenheimer at Global IMAX Box Office’

Christopher Nolan has once again captivated his fans with his latest film, Oppenheimer. The anticipation to see the movie on the largest screen possible was immense, considering Nolan’s affinity for IMAX and film. On July 21st, Oppenheimer was released in digital IMAX and IMAX 70mm formats, featuring Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer. The film made history for IMAX screens by generating 20% of the $174 million global box office revenue for Oppenheimer. Despite being showcased on just 740 IMAX screens, it managed to earn an impressive $35 million at the global box office.

This remarkable performance by IMAX also established several records. It became the highest-grossing IMAX opening for a Nolan film, the biggest IMAX opening for the month of July, and the largest IMAX opening in 2023. The same weekend saw the convergence of audiences for Oppenheimer and Greta Gerwig‘s Barbie, creating the “Barbenheimer” double feature. While Oppenheimer raked in over $80 million in the United States and Canada, Barbie garnered an impressive $155 million. In the IMAX domestic box office alone, Oppenheimer generated $21.1 million, setting a record by contributing 26.2% of the domestic gross, all from just 411 IMAX screens. Furthermore, the film achieved other IMAX milestones, including being Universal Pictures’ highest-earning title and boasting a massive per-screen average of $51,000. Internationally, Oppenheimer collected $13.9 million in IMAX screenings.

“Given the strength of our pre-sales, the ‘A’ CinemaScore, and the historical performance of Christopher Nolan’s films, we firmly believe that this is just the beginning of Oppenheimer’s global box office success,” stated Rich Gelfond, CEO of IMAX. “We have witnessed sellouts at 4:00 a.m. shows worldwide, with people traveling across borders for the opportunity to experience Oppenheimer in IMAX 70mm. This phenomenon is unparalleled in the world of IMAX, and we are only scratching the surface.”
